How To Fix CrossFire Micro-Stuttering

I've tested this in 2 games that had pretty bad micro-stuttering, and it fixed it in both cases. If this works for other games as well (it should), please let me know in the comments.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 had bad stuttering all over the place, and is now super smooth. Skyrim had stutter in certain places, most notably indoors and when sprinting outside. This is mostly fixed - there's still some stutter indoors, but that happens even when I turn off CrossFire completely, so I guess it's just a Skyrim issue.

How To Fix The Stuttering

I got this tip from Tom's Hardware originally, but there are a few things they don't mention. You need the "Technology Preview" version of RadeonPro to do this, and you can get that here. The download link for that is not very easy to find.

Here's a screenshot of the settings I used:

The important thing is the Dynamic Framerate Control setting. I used 40. Other numbers may also work, but this works for me so I didn't bother to test other numbers. Interestingly, judging by the description I'd have thought it would limit the framerate, but it doesn't. I don't know if triple buffering and double vsync are necessary, so feel free to experiment. In case you didn't notice, I have absolutely no clue why or how this works, only that it does. So don't ask me to explain the science behind it, 'cause I don't know! 🙂

There are still some issues, though. Even though these settings made the aforementioned games super smooth, it still reverts back to "stutter mode" sometimes. This usually happens after a loading screen of some kind. So in Skyrim, sometimes after loading a new area, it'll start stuttering again. And in TDU2, it may start stuttering again if you go to another island, or start a race. I'm not yet sure how to prevent this from happening, but I do know how to make the stutter go away again (at least until it comes back). All you do is ALT+TAB out of the game, and back in. In every case, this has fixed the stutter for me. Annoying, but still a huge improvement.

Please share if you found this useful, and feel free to post questions and other tips in the comments. Especially if you find a way to stop the stutter from coming back, I'd love to know. 🙂
