Sunbunt relief!

As the Austalians say “Slip. Slop. Slap” Slip on a shirt, slop on the sunscreen and slap on a hat, but sometimes one forgets how strong the sun can be! Sunburn can be extremely painful and unpleasant, pain relievers and anti-inflammatories from the pharmacy help, combined with home remedies for taking the “hot” out of the burn.

Now one’s common sense dictates cold is best to cool down any burn, but avoid applying ice directly to the burn. A cold shower is a great way to start the process. Alternatively soaking in a cool bath with sunburn soothing remedies is even better.

Here are the top soothres for bath soaks:

  • Oatmeal is a natural anti-inflammatory. The best way to use it is take a packet of plain, unflavoured oatmeal and grind it into a fine powder. Then simply dissolve it in warm water and then pour into the cooling bath. Make sure to soak for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse off under a cold shower.
  • The tea alternatives, to an oatmeal bath are either a black tea or a chamomile bath. Place 5 to 8 teabags in a large jug of boiling water to steep. Place the jug in the fridge to speed the cooling process. One cooled you can pour the contents of the jug into the cool bath and then soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Alternatively you can rinse a linen or muslin cloth in the tea and then apply to the affected area, rinse and repeat.
  • The last option for adding into the bath is apple cider vinegar. Add two cups of vinegar to the cool bath and then soak for 15 to 20 minutes.

With all of the above try adding 2 to three drops of the essential oil lavender to help soothe and calm the skin. As a bonus the scent is also relaxing.

One of the best topical remedies is aloe. The easiest is if you have an aloe plant in the garden – simply break open the leaves to expose the white within and apply to the burn. If you do not have access to an aloe plant, then look for a pure aloe gel in a health store. Make sure to choose one that lists aloe as its first ingredient. Slather the burnt area and reapply as necessary.

Something I recently came across, which is highly recommended is a cucumber body mask, which has proven highly cooling and soothing. It consists of chamomile tea, a cucumber, lavender oil and aloe gel.

Take 1/4 cup boiling water and steep 2 bags of chamomile tea in it to make a strong tea. Allow to cool. Once the tea is cool, remove the teabags and press them to extract the last of the tea before throwing them away. Blend the tea with 1 whole peeled cucumber, a quarter cup of aloe gel and a couple of drops of lavender oil, until smooth. Spread the body mask over the affected areas and leave on for 20 or more minutes. Finish off with a cool shower and smooth on aloe gel afterwards.

It is best to avoid getting sunburnt, but hopefully if you do these recommendations will come in handy!
